Guest jumptship Posted July 10, 2005 Report Posted July 10, 2005 Hi all, Just bought a 1998 2.0 Galaxy with 150,000 Km on it. (I am American living in Italy) Took it on a road trip about 2 weeks after buying it and noticed a few things that I would like clarified. 1. On the Autostrada at 130 Km/h (80 MPH) the engine runs at about 3800-4000 RPM. This seems high to me, anyone? 2. Sometimes with the AC on you can here a relay click in the dash and feel a loss or gain of power. Not a huge difference but noticeable. Is this normal? 3. This thing is a dog!! I realize it is only a 2.0 L but jeez! Quote

Welcome aboard  1? no idea I run a VR6 :D 2. yep this is normal! due to the extra load you have now placed on the engine running the AC system, fans etc 3. yep it's a 2Ltr dragging around 1.5, 2 ton of equipment! cant expect to much out it! if you want power then swap it for a VR6 version or even an oil burner  Quote
GSMGuy Posted July 10, 2005 Report Posted July 10, 2005 I'd say those revs are about normal for a gearing of 20-22 mph per '000 rpm in top.. Mike Quote
Guest MATT Posted July 10, 2005 Report Posted July 10, 2005 well, i don't know about your 2.0 petrol, but my 1.9tdi is revving at about 2,000 revs at 65mph, but its a different engine MATT Quote

GSMGuy Posted July 10, 2005 Report Posted July 10, 2005 Del - the only thing that will give you less revs at the same speed (in a manual) is a change in gearing, ie wheel/tyres or box/final drive... Changing the plugs leads will not change the gearing - it's a physical impossibility.. Mike Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted July 10, 2005 Report Posted July 10, 2005 May also be worth checking the tyre pressures, and that the correct wheels/tyres are fitted. Is the 2.0 really geared that low ? Quote
Guest MATT Posted July 11, 2005 Report Posted July 11, 2005 well, i don't know about your 2.0 petrol, but my 1.9tdi is revving at about 2,000 revs at 65mph, but its a different engine ..and gearbox  ...yep  MATT Quote
Guest paule230 Posted July 11, 2005 Report Posted July 11, 2005 After my previous car (Merc' E230) I also noticed how high the cruising rpm is. My Merc did 80mph @3,000rpm and the Galaxy does about 3,800rpm at the same speed, yet both are same size engine's, similar weight. Oh and the Merc was an auto. Quote
faded-fish Posted July 11, 2005 Report Posted July 11, 2005 I have a 2.0 and the RPMs are exactly the same - 3500 at 70mph in 5th gear. It's the highest reving engine I've ever had to contend with. Has anybody tried changing the gearbox on one of these? I'm sure that must have a detrimental effect on fuel economy at speed - how about a mod to make 5th gear a real overdrive? Quote
Ivor Posted July 11, 2005 Report Posted July 11, 2005 Tdi : a touch over 2000RPM in 6th at 70MPH. Quote
seatkid Posted July 11, 2005 Report Posted July 11, 2005 get the plugs & ht leads checkedit will make a diffrence as mine didas we got more power & less rpm's at the same speed. Is there nothing Dellboyt's magic leads and plugs can't do? quantum entanglement is a wonderous thing....spooky even.... Quote
Guest MATT Posted July 11, 2005 Report Posted July 11, 2005 i think the 2.3i engine must not have a very good gear box higher up the range.'needs a 6th gear - or even a 7th as well' MATT Quote
GSMGuy Posted July 11, 2005 Report Posted July 11, 2005 Don't forget, the 2.0 and the 2.3 all have one thing missing... Torque.... The Tdi 115 & 130 put out 310nm of torque at just over 1900rpm, whereas I would think the petrol motors would be approachink 4000rpm for max torque.. (which is prob a LOT less than 310nm) Raise the gearing and they would struggle to pull the car... Mike Quote
Guest smudge.g Posted July 22, 2005 Report Posted July 22, 2005 HiI'm a Brit also living in Italy (Naples) and have had my Galaxy out here for 3 years. It is also a 2.0 petrol and the revs are always around 35-3800 at 120-130kph in 5th. The loss of power when engaging Aircon can be considerable sometimes, especially with passengers onboard. If I want to overtake, for example, I have to switch of the aircon, drop a gear and hopefully have enough power to get by otherwise its down to about 60kph from 120! In Sicily last year, had to kick out my 3 passengers and their luggage to be able to get up a moderate slope at the Etna carpark - no power at all!!!!! (but I still wouldnt swap my Galaxy - well except for perhaps the 1.9tdi that a friend has). Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted July 22, 2005 Report Posted July 22, 2005 You have a problem with your Galaxy, without a doubt. Should be able to manage an incline with all passengers on board (7 in the car) Quote
tim-spam Posted July 22, 2005 Report Posted July 22, 2005 Even the VR6 can only muster 270 Nm (I think at around 3000rpm). Quote
